About Oak Pointe Medical Products
Kathleen Dunning, OTR, founded Oak Pointe
Medical Products, L.L.C. to provide the highest quality durable
medical products and educational services for the safety and
well-being of health care providers, emergency medical providers and
caretakers.
Oak Pointe Medical Products is a distributor of the Lifeslider and
is the sole U.S. distributor of the ELK (emergency lifting cushion),
two devices that assist emergency personnel when lifting people with
obesity, or other special needs. Most recently, Oak Pointe
Medical has added the MANGAR CAMEL and Slide-Mat to its line
of safety solutions to be used across various industries and
occupations.
As an occupational therapist,
Dunning has evaluated and treated numerous work-injured emergency
service employees from municipal fire departments and national
ambulance companies and recognized that many of these injuries are
the result of lifting people with obesity.
The Oak Pointe Safety Solutions can provide significant, measurable cost
savings. It is evident there is an increasing number of back
and shoulder injuries performing these tasks without assistive
equipment and proper techniques. When an employee is injured
on the job, workers’ compensation costs, health care costs and
overtime costs for replacement workers can be staggering – not to
mention the risk of injury to the citizens they are trying to help,
exposing the city or company to litigation resulting staggering
legal costs.
Unlike traditional product distributors of medical equipment, Oak
Pointe Medical Products possesses the educational background and
professional experience to provide extensive training to the users
of lifting equipment. Dunning is able to provide specific
instruction regarding the identification of risk factors and
techniques to minimize these risk factors. Oak Pointe Medical
Products can address an existing referral base of physicians,
insurance adjusters, case managers, and employees who understand the
benefits of reducing risk of injury.
Oak Pointe's founder, Kathy
Dunning, has specialized in industrial injury rehabilitation and
injury prevention and risk management consultation. In 1999, after
five years as a corporate officer and partner in a firm specializing
in industrial occupational therapy, she founded and is the sole
owner of Advantage Consulting, Inc., a private occupational therapy
practice with three clinic locations in the metropolitan Detroit
area. The staff of occupational therapists performs services
focusing on assisting return to work for injury workers such as
functional capacity evaluations, job assessments, and job coaching
as well as daily work hardening/reconditioning programs. The
therapists also provide job site and in-home functional evaluations
making recommendations for handicap accessibility in order to meet
the Title III American with Disabilities Act requirements for safe
egress in and out of a building. These products provide a mechanism
for a proper evacuation plan.
